According to Florida Today newspaper, a 38 year old Merritt Island man was killed on Monday, September 17, 2012 following a head-on collision on South Tropical Trail just north of the Pineda Causeway. The car accident occurred at approximately 11:37 a.m. one mile north of the Pineda Causeway. A 2005 Hyundai SUV was headed south and crashed into a northbound 1986 Chevrolet. Reportedly, the driver of the Hyundai, a 70 year old Melbourne man, looked down and when he looked back up, he had drifted into the northbound lane. Both drivers were taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center with serious personal injuries. The passenger in the Chevrolet was taken to Viera Hospital where he died approximately two hours after the car accident. South Tropical Trail was closed while the accident was cleared.
