The Importance of Uninsured Motorist Coverage in Florida

Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage is one of the most important types of coverages you can add to your automobile or motorcycle policy in Florida.  UM coverage is optional in Florida.  It is not one of the mandatory coverages Florida law requires motorists to carry.  However, UM coverage must be offered to Florida motorist at the time the insurance is purchased.  In fact, all insureds must sign a Selection/Rejection form indicating that they have either selected to purchase UM coverage or have rejected UM coverage.  If UM coverage is selected, a decision must then be made regarding the amount of UM coverage and whether or not the insured wants to select "stacked" UM coverage.

UM coverage protects an insured when an automobile or motorcycle accident occurs and the party who causes the accident either has no insurance coverage (UM) or is underinsured (UIM) based on the type of injury you have sustained.  Consult with your insurance agent today and be sure you carry UM coverage to protect yourself and your loved ones in case someone else causes an accident and is uninsured or underinsured.
